“Yeah, good idea. Okay.”

Forcing the tension from his mind, Joey thought out to the many spirit vines whose presence he felt in the jungle across the way. Instantly, a vine as thick as his forearm came tumbling down from above.

“It’s not long enough to reach over here,” Joey observed, frowning. “I wanted to use it for a safety rope.”

“Then I shall be your safety rope.” Letting go of his hand, Braeden flew across to settle on the opposite ledge. He looped the vine twice around his wrist, got a good grip on it, and leaned across the gulf with his free hand held out. “Take my hand, love.”

Joey gulped. Safety was only a few feet away. All he had to do was take two steps forward. Braeden was right there to help him. But the water roared under his feet and those two steps felt like miles. His knees shook, and he hated it. Hated his own weakness.

“There is no shame in fear,” Braeden said, his voice soft and calm. “But I’ll not let you fall, love. Remember that.”

Joey gave him a weak smile. “You can read my mind, can’t you?”

“I have no need to read your mind, when your face is a mirror for your heart.”

Braeden waggled his fingers, his gaze locked with Joey’s. “Come, a chuisle. Take my hand.”

Biting his lip, Joey took a cautious step forward, then another, never once looking away from Braeden’s face. Braeden’s fingers closed around his wrist in a strong and reassuring grip, and Joey felt some of his fear dissolve. He grasped Braeden’s wrist, held his breath and lifted his right foot to step across the void.

He hadn’t yet gotten a foothold on the opposite ledge when the ground beneath his left foot crumbled. Before he quite knew what had happened, he found himself dangling over the mist-shrouded depths. Only Braeden’s iron grip on his wrist kept him from falling. Swinging his other hand up, he clamped it onto Braeden’s arm and tried to pull himself onto the ledge, but he wasn’t strong enough.

“Help me,” he pleaded, sounding as panicked as he felt. “I can’t get up, Braeden.”

“Joseph, the vines,” Braeden gasped, the strain of holding Joey’s weight crystal clear in his voice. “Call more vines, quickly.”

Joey’s frantic thought brought dozens of spirit vines and a few other species cascading down the slope from both sides of the ravine. He focused his will just in time to avoid being torn apart by many different plants trying to pull him in several directions at once. Two old, sturdy spirit vines from the side he was trying to reach wrapped around him and hauled him through the air, wrenching his hand from Braeden’s. The world 74

swung around him in a dizzy arc. The vines deposited him on his feet just under the trees at the edge of the fissure, and everything righted itself again.

Joey stood there panting, heart racing with the shock of what had almost happened.

Braeden zoomed out of the chasm, hit the ground running and swept Joey into his arms.
